What's New at NW

2007 has brought many changes and growth for Naturally Well, and myself. I have facilitated at retreats, taught yoga for Nicky while she was away in India, added a "Yoga for Men" class (now entering its third running), a prenatal birth partner class, and diversified my service offerings.
2008 brings the addition of offering an Introduction to Natural Health and Wellness class.
FYI: Did you know that in addition to Shiatsu, Specialized Kinesiology, Massage (Tui Na), and Acupressure, I also offer some other related therapies.
Cupping: This is a Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that involves the use of suction or vacuum cups on the acu-points and meridians. They vary in size, and can be used stationary, or moved along the surface using oil. Cupping opens up the energy channels, and can work very deeply into the body. Some studies have shown effects as deep as 10cm. Cupping can be used stand alone, or added to many of my treatments. It is often very effective at relieving stubborn muscle pain, cold and flu symptoms, joint pain, and swelling. Not just for pain cupping also has some great cosmetic uses. Cupping is very effective at helping your body with cellulite, stretch marks, and scar reduction. The cups I use are medical grade plastic with a manual vacuum pump to activate them. Click Here for more information.
Moxibustion: This is a Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that involves the use of Moxa (Chinese Mugwort Herb) in stick or wool form. The Moxa is used to warm specific acu-points to address specific symptoms. Studies have shown that use of Mugwort as opposed to other heat sources is statistically a stronger therapy. The Moxa is applied indirectly to warm the point by bringing the glowing stick close to the point, or directly by burning the wool form on a slice of ginger, or bed of salt directly on the point. Note that the treatment never gets warm enough to burn your skin. Moxibustion is effective in dealing with pain, cold related conditions, damp conditions, menstrual/menopause symptoms, and headaches. Moxibustion is also very (85-90%) effective as safe natural way of turning breach babies. This method has been used for thousands of years in Asia, and is now being used daily in many western hospitals. Click Here for more information.

Seven Quick Fixes To Feel Better

The signals our bodies use to tell us we need to cleanse ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally are multifaceted and often mirror symptoms we associate with illness. If we heed these signs, we not only feel better quickly but also stave off poor health before it can start. These quick fixes for common ailments can get you started.

1. Applying pressure to the acupressure point between the thumb and forefinger can release blockages causing pain, tension, and fatigue. You can relieve a headache naturally by squeezing for 20 seconds and releasing for 10 seconds, without letting go, four times.

2. To breathe freely, irrigate your nasal passages with a neti pot and warm salt water. As you clear and soothe the sinuses, congestion associated with allergies or infection will gradually disappear.

3. Apple cider vinegar is a powerful purifying and detoxifying agent. Soaking for 20 minutes in a warm bath infused with two cups of apple cider vinegar pulls toxins from the body and can clear blocked energy.

4. The foods you eat can have a profound impact on your outlook and mood. Eating a small yet satisfying meal rich in complex carbohydrates can lift your spirit and help you let go of feelings of anger, irritability, and depression.

5. Anxiety and fear dissipate quickly when countered with conscious breathing because concentrating on the breath enables you to refocus your attention inward. You can ground yourself and regain your usual calm by taking a series of deep belly breaths as you visualize your feet growing roots that stretch miles down into the earth.

6. Though tuning out can seem counterproductive, a few minutes spent lost in daydreams or listening to soothing music can help you see your circumstances from a new angle when you feel frustrated.

7. If you feel ill health coming on, brew a wellness elixir. Simmer three sliced lemons, one teaspoon freshly grated ginger, one clove freshly minced garlic, and one quarter teaspoon cayenne pepper in five cups water until the lemons are soft and pale. Strain a portion into a mug and add honey by tablespoons until you can tolerate the taste. Drinking this potent mixture of antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal ingredients three times each day can ensure your symptoms never progress into a full-blown illness.

Complementary Therapy

Complementary therapy is the use of alternative medicine practices in addition to standard or traditional medicine. Often time’s conventional medicine alone is not able to accomplish the desired effects. By combining the two concepts of medical practice, the best from both can be used to complement each other. Historically, the traditional medical society resisted such ideas, but.....
By 1997, responding to numerous studies, the Canadian Medical Association decided to encourage medical schools to offer courses in alternative medicine.
By 1998, nearly two thirds of 75 medical schools located in Canada were offering courses in alternative and/or complementary medicine.
Even though nearly 40% of the Canadian population surveyed had used some forms of alternative medicine, we must not lose site of the fact that standard medicine does many things extremely well. Perhaps the best illustration is the effectiveness of a well trained emergency room team. There is no equal to their skill at saving lives. Another good example would be the cures that today's modern medicine performs in such areas as cancer treatment. However, in many instances, complementary medicine has taken its place as a partner in the effort for overall cure and treatment.
It has been estimated that world wide only 10 to 30 percent of all healthcare is provided by traditional or conventional medical care. The balance (70 to 90 percent) of care is provided through various practices which fall into the broad category of alternative or complementary medicine. The World Health Organization has identified over three hundred different practices or variations of practices. These practices vary from the most basic levels of home care based on folk medicine, to fully organized professional health care providers working within highly educated and highly structured systems. When looked at from the patient's viewpoint instead of the practitioners as above, the numbers are even more impressive. The World Health Organization has estimated that over 80% of the world's population is presently using some form of herbal medicine as a part of their everyday primary healthcare. This may be as simple as the use of herbal teas for colds and related illnesses, to the complex combining of herbs with other primary forms of alternative medicine such as Ayurvedic, homeopathic, naturopathic, traditional oriental, Native American Indian medicine and even traditional medicine.
